A Weekend in May

Saturday I went morel hunting. If you've never had morels, they are to mushrooms what Tiramisu is to desserts. Jack even helped me. Of course, we weren't in the woods, we were at the State Capital, where there's a Farmer's Market around the square every Saturday morning. So I got a 1/4 lb. of mushrooms for the bargain price of $7. I guess Wisconsin is THE place for mushrooms, but the few people who know how and where to find morels, aren't telling. But then, if you could go out and pick something in the woods and sell it for $30 a pound, would you share your picking spot? I think the one and only time I ever went mushroom picking was when I was in the 5th grade and my friend, Judy K., and I went up to Michigan with her mom. I don't remember much about the trip, except that a police officer (park guard?) made us leave and said we couldn't hunt where we were hunting. On my own, I'd never go out to hunt mushrooms - I'm sure I'd only find the poisonous ones.
Here's me with my little baggie of morels - can you see them?

Here's a better picture for you - just before they went into the pan for saute-ing

Our treat afterwards was lunch at the Flattop Grill - what's become one of our favorite places to go in Madison

Can you tell we LOVE pictures of the State Capital? It's so neat to live close to it.
